Used Wheel Axle for Construction Equipment

On the same axle, the left and right wheel axles do not always have the same length, and those on the front axle often differ from the rear axle. Simply ordering "a wheel axle for a loader" is therefore not sufficient. Codimatra dismantles original wheel axles from wheeled excavators, loaders, articulated dump trucks, and backhoe loaders, inspects them in its workshop in Castelculier, near Agen, and sorts them by machine model. Our team assists you in identifying the correct part, backed by over 40 years of experience in selling used spare parts for construction equipment.

The Role of the Wheel Axle in a Machine's Axle Assembly

The wheel axle fits internally into the planetaries of the differential and transfers torque to the wheel hub, often through a reducer. It rotates within the axle housing "trumpet", on a bearing, and is immersed in oil sealed by a gasket at the axle end. On a wheeled excavator or loaded dump truck, it handles both engine torque twist and part of the machine's weight. If the housing is cracked or the differential worn, consider our used axle assemblies.

Wheel Axles Dismantled by Equipment Type

  • Articulated dump trucks Volvo A20 to A30 and Caterpillar 725 and 735B
  • Wheeled excavators Liebherr A904 to A924, Caterpillar M313D and M320, Hitachi ZX140W
  • Wheeled loaders Liebherr L524 to L576 and Volvo L120E, L180E
  • Backhoe loaders Case 580 and Fermec 760, 860, Caterpillar TH330B telescopic models
  • Mecalac machines 714MW, 12MTX, and 12MX

How to Identify the Correct Wheel Axle Before Ordering

Usually, three measurements suffice to distinguish between two similar axles. Count the number of splines on the differential side, and on the wheel side if the axle has splines there as well. Measure the length under the flange, from the flange face to the splined end. Finally, note the diameter at the bearing seat. Add the machine position—front or rear axle, left or right side—and the serial number: our advisors find the matching used wheel axle or a model with the same dimensions.

Signs That a Wheel Axle Needs Replacement

  • Rounded or stepped splines: the wheel has play when starting.
  • Twisted axle after an overload, visible by wobbling during rotation.
  • Scratched bearing or seal seat causing oil leaks at the axle end.
  • Clicking noises when turning or sounds increasing with speed.
  • Clean break of the axle, often starting at the splines.

Used vs. Remanufactured Wheel Axles: What’s Different

For the most common dump trucks and loaders, remanufactured wheel axles are available. For less common wheeled excavators or older machines, new axles are often no longer listed in the manufacturer's catalog. A used axle removed from the same model retains the original spline count, length, and surface treatment: it fits perfectly into the planetaries and hub without modification. The inspection focuses on spline condition, absence of twist, and bearing and seal seats, which must remain smooth.

What to Expect When Replacing the Axle

  • A new seal at the axle end: the old one almost always leaks after removal.
  • The axle bearing, which should be inspected and often replaced simultaneously.
  • Axle oil, to drain and refill with the grade recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Inspection of the planetaries and reducer after a break, because steel debris can circulate in the oil.
  • The hub, if its internal splines show wear at the same location as the axle.

Requesting a Wheel Axle from Our Advisors

Send the brand, model, and serial number of the machine, along with a photo of the dismantled axle and its measurements. Our advisors search among approximately 17,000 references of used spare parts and respond at 05 18 23 21 34. If you are replacing both sides of the same axle, please specify: they will preferentially look for a pair removed from the same machine with comparable wear. Other axle and drivetrain parts are grouped in our used construction transmission parts.

The affected wheel no longer receives torque: the machine pulls to one side, or doesn't move at all if the differential is not locked. A sharp click often precedes the break. After the failure, oil may leak from the axle end. Stop the machine immediately, as broken axle pieces can damage the differential or reducer.

The driveshaft connects the gearbox or transfer case to the axle externally, with universal joints at each end. The wheel axle is inside the axle, between the differential and the wheel. These parts are not interchangeable. See our range of used driveshafts if that is the faulty part.

On a construction machine, the wheel is bolted to the hub, which rotates on its bearings around the axle housing "trumpet". The wheel axle, housed inside the axle, drives this hub from the differential. It is also called a half-shaft or axle shaft. On a non-driven axle, the wheel is mounted on a spindle.

A bearing that is noisy or has play should be replaced without delay, otherwise it heats up and damages the axle seat. When dismantling, run your finger over this seat: if it is smooth, new bearing and seal are sufficient. If scratched or heat-blued, also replace the wheel axle, or the new bearing will wear out quickly.

Provide the brand, model, year of manufacture, and serial number of the machine, then the axle position: front or rear axle, left or right side. If possible, include the number of spline teeth, the flange-to-end length, and any stamped reference on the part. A photo of the dismantled axle helps our advisors.
