What is the origin of the Poclain brand?

Poclain was founded in 1927 in Plessis-Belleville, originally named Ateliers Bataille & Léger, a repair workshop for agricultural equipment established by Georges Bataille. The company designed the first fully hydraulic construction machine in 1949, showcased to the public in 1951. During the 1960s and 1970s, Poclain was among the leading manufacturers of hydraulic excavators, with machines distributed in over 180 countries. The TY 45 model, launched in 1961, introduced the hydraulic excavator to construction sites across Europe.

Why did the Poclain brand disappear?

• Between 1977 and 1981, the American company Tenneco acquired 40% capital of Poclain
• In 1985, J.I. Case, a subsidiary of Tenneco, became the majority shareholder
• Production continued for a few years under the combined Case Poclain brand
• In 1999, the Poclain name definitively disappeared from new construction machines, replaced by the Case brand

Who bought Poclain?

The Case group, then a subsidiary of the American conglomerate Tenneco, acquired the majority stake in Poclain in 1985 and fully integrated production under its own brand by the late 1990s. However, the hydraulic components division, created in 1968 as Poclain Hydraulics, became independent and remains active internationally today, with no capital link to the original excavators.

Case Poclain: where to find parts for 688 to 1188 excavators?

After 1985, excavators left the factory with the dual Case Poclain branding. Depending on the year of manufacture, the nameplate of a 688, 788, 888, 988, 1088, or 1188 may bear either name.
