Used Excavator and Construction Equipment Steps

Right at ground level, the step takes it all: stumps, curbs, concrete blocks, frozen ruts. A bent step or a torn grate makes every climb into the cab a risk. Codimatra recovers original steps from excavators, loaders, and dump trucks dismantled in Castelculier, then checks they are flat and securely mountable before selling them. For over 40 years, our team has been dismantling and inspecting parts for construction machinery.

The most exposed part of an excavator

The step, or access step to the cab, allows climbing into the operator's station and reaching maintenance points. On a wheel loader or excavator, it often protrudes beyond the machine’s outline and hits the first obstacle it encounters. On a tracked excavator, it bears mud and stones thrown up by the tracks. Together with handrails, it is essential to access safety: a warped step changes foot placement and increases the risk of falling.

Used steps by brand and model

  • Caterpillar: excavators 336E, 345C, M313D, and M320F; loaders 918M, 924G, 950K, and 966K; dump truck 769C
  • Volvo: loaders L120E and L150C; wheeled excavators EW140D and EW160D
  • Mecalac: excavators 714MW and 12MTX
  • Hitachi ZX140W-5, Komatsu WA320-6, New Holland W190B, Case WX200, Liebherr A316

Step, access ladder, or platform: identifying the part

Depending on the machine, cab access may be a simple bolted step, a two- or three-step ladder, a retractable step folding for transport, or a platform also giving access to the engine hood. Note the number of steps, total height, fixing spacing, and mounting side. On a loader, the ladder attaches to the rear chassis; on a hydraulic excavator, it hooks to the turret or lower frame. The model and serial number on the identification plate confirm compatibility.

Before sale, we verify

  • Flat steps, grates, and checker plates without tear
  • Welds and mounting tabs without cracks
  • Undeformed supports, free joints on retractable models
  • Reusable bolts and threaded holes

Send the brand, model, and serial number of your construction machine, the mounting side, and a photo of the fixings. Our advisors search for the original spare part among about 17,000 references and respond at 05 18 23 21 34. Parts are shipped within mainland France. Also find toolboxes and the full range of used construction body parts.

Rarely without verification: height, number of steps, and fixing spacing often vary from one generation to another. Our advisors check compatibility using the serial number before offering a part. Include a photo of the existing part installed to speed up the search.

On construction machinery, it is also called an access step, cab step, access ladder, or footrest. Manufacturer catalogs often use "step." Whatever the name, it's the bolted part beneath the cab door allowing entry to the operator's station.

Written as a single word, "step" (marchepied), plural "steps" (marchepieds): this is the dictionary spelling. The hyphenated form, "marche-pied," is still widespread in parts catalogs and searches. Both refer to the same part.

To maintain grip despite mud, rain, and frost. Checker plate offers a non-slip raised pattern that's easy to clean, while grating allows dirt and water to pass through the step. A worn smooth step loses this traction and is a good reason for replacement.
