Used Volvo Construction Wheel Shaft

An articulated A30 dump truck slipping on a loaded wheel, an L120 loader clunking with every bucket strike: on Volvo machines, the wheel shaft is often the first suspect. Codimatra dismantles Volvo loaders, dump trucks, and wheeled excavators and offers their original wheel shafts, workshop-tested and identified by the donor machine model and axle position. For other brands, please check our range of used wheel shafts.

Volvo Construction Wheel Shaft: Transmission Operation
The torque from the diesel engine first passes through the gearbox, then the Volvo driveshaft which transmits it to the axles. Inside each axle, the differential distributes the torque between left and right. The wheel shaft then takes over: housed within the axle’s trumpet, it drives the planetary gear of the Volvo wheel reducer, which multiplies the rotation just before the rim. Although it looks simple, its splines withstand every traction shock.
Transmission diagram of a Volvo machine
- Diesel engine: supplies the torque.
- Gearbox: selects the gear ratio and direction.
- Driveshaft: transfers torque to each axle.
- Differential: distributes torque left and right.
- Wheel shaft: links the differential to the hub.
- Wheel reducer: multiplies rotation just before the rim.
Front and rear wheel shafts
On a Volvo loader, the front and rear wheel shafts don’t always share the same reference number. The fixed front axle endures most of the loading stress, while the rear axle oscillates to follow the terrain. On A-series dump trucks, the tandem axles each have their own shafts. On EW wheeled excavators, only the front axle steers, and its shaft includes a universal joint. Always specify the exact part position.
Volvo wheel shafts in stock by family
- Wheeled loaders: from L45B to L220G, our most extensive range.
- Articulated dump trucks: from A20 to A40D, front axle and tandem axles.
- Wheeled excavators: EW140B, EW160C, and EWR150E.
- Backhoe loader: BL71.
- Older Volvo BM: 4500 loader, subject to availability.
Volvo articulated dump trucks A20 to A40D
Our stock covers A20, A25D, A25E, A30D, A30E, A30G, A35, A35C, A35D, A35G, and A40D models. These six-wheel-drive machines have individual shafts for each axle; front axle shafts do not necessarily fit the tandem axles. Dump trucks often work on slopes and muddy terrain: shafts are exposed to repeated shocks when a wheel grips after slipping. Please specify the exact shaft location, axle, and side when enquiring. Including the Volvo catalogue number from your documentation speeds up your request.
Volvo L-series loader half-shafts
- Compact and medium: L45B, L70, L90C, L90D, and L90E.
- Mid-range: L110E, L110F, and L120E.
- Large models: L150C to L150G, L180E to L180G, L220E to L220G.
- Front or rear axle: both axles on the same loader don’t always fit the same shaft.
- Series letter: length and spline count may vary between E, F, and G series.
EW and EWR wheeled excavators: steering axle
On EW140B, EW160C, and EWR150E wheeled excavators, the front axle oscillates and steers the wheels. Its wheel shaft must transmit torque at an angle via a universal joint at the Volvo spindle. This joint is the most exposed part: dust, neglected lubrication, and frequent steering accelerate wear. Cross bearings and joints are available on our Volvo driveshaft page.
Symptoms of a faulty wheel shaft or transmission
- Clunking: a sharp knock with each engine rev or direction change.
- Loss of traction: one wheel stays stationary while the differential turns.
- Vibrations: a bent shaft causes axle vibrations at transfer speed.
- Metal shavings: particles on the magnetic plug of the axle or reducer.
- Leaking: oil at the hub side, indicating a seal damaged by a worn shaft.
Replacing a wheel shaft and bearing on a Volvo machine
With the engine off and machine secured, drain the axle oil, then remove the reducer cover or hub, depending on the axle design. The shaft can then be withdrawn externally. Take this opportunity to inspect the Volvo wheel hub, its bearings, and the planetary gear teeth. A broken shaft near the differential also warrants checking the Volvo axle nose before reassembly. Always replace the seals.
Preparing your Volvo wheel shaft enquiry
- Machine: Volvo model with series letter plus chassis number.
- Position: front or rear axle, tandem axle for dump trucks, left or right side.
- Dimensions: overall length and spline counts on differential and wheel sides.
- Part reference: Volvo catalogue number stamped on the shaft, if still readable.
- Photos: overall view and close-ups of splines or broken area.
Why choose an original Volvo wheel shaft
A used Volvo construction wheel shaft dismantled from a machine of the same series exactly matches the manufacturer’s dimensions, splines, and surface treatment. This avoids the adjustments sometimes required by aftermarket parts. For loaders and dump trucks with several thousand hours, it’s the cost-effective way to get your machine working without overspending relative to its value. Each shaft is inspected before shipment and its condition described when you receive the quote.
Where to find the part reference on a Volvo shaft
- On the shaft: the part reference is often stamped on the body, sometimes obscured by rust.
- In documentation: the catalogue number shown in the Volvo parts manual for the machine.
- On the axle: identification plate, helpful if the shaft is unreadable.
- Location: part’s position on the machine, axle, and side.
- Condition: description of wear or shaft breakage.
Catalogue number and condition of the proposed shaft
Upon receiving your request, we match the part reference with catalog numbers of available wheel shafts. If the part reference is no longer legible, the machine’s serial number and your measurements usually suffice to identify it. We then describe the condition of the proposed shaft: splines, bearing surfaces, and straightness. Mounted with replaced seals and fresh axle oil, a well-maintained shaft guarantees long service life. Available shafts are also listed on our website, with their original machine details.

No. The shafts for L-series loaders and A-series dump trucks differ in length and spline count. Even within a family, shafts for L150E and L150G vary. Provide us with the part reference or, failing that, the full designation and machine serial number: we verify compatibility before shipping.
On a machine, the axle driving the wheel is called the wheel shaft or half-shaft, since each side of the axle has its own. The fixed part around which the hub rotates is named differently: spindle for a steering axle, trumpet for a rigid axle. The axle term refers to the whole assembly with both wheels.
A half-shaft links one side of the differential to its corresponding wheel. It’s called a half-shaft because an axle has two, left and right. On Volvo loaders and dump trucks, it drives the planetary gear reducer housed in the hub.
Four factors determine it: the original machine, length, position on the line, and condition of splines or cross bearings. At comparable condition, a used original part generally costs less than new. Send us the reference or model of your Volvo machine for a quote.
Balancing is done on a specialized bench: the shaft spins at operating speed, sensors detect imbalance, then the workshop adds or removes small weights until vibrations stop. This requires a transmission specialist. For used original shafts, keep existing weights and align the yoke mark during reassembly.
The universal joint is the articulated joint with cross bearings that allows rotation despite an angle between two shafts. The driveshaft refers to the entire assembly: a tube, a slide, and a universal joint at each end. Commonly, the whole is called "driveshaft". On Volvo EW excavators, the front wheel shaft also includes such a joint.
No. Volvo FH or FM trucks and Volvo construction machines use different axles and drive lines, sized for different loads and speeds. For a Volvo loader, dump truck, or excavator, only a part from a construction machine with the same reference will fit.
