What are the symptoms of a broken wheel axle?

The affected wheel no longer receives torque: the machine pulls to one side, or doesn't move at all if the differential is not locked. A sharp click often precedes the break. After the failure, oil may leak from the axle end. Stop the machine immediately, as broken axle pieces can damage the differential or reducer.

What is the difference between a wheel axle and a driveshaft?

The driveshaft connects the gearbox or transfer case to the axle externally, with universal joints at each end. The wheel axle is inside the axle, between the differential and the wheel. These parts are not interchangeable. See our range of used driveshafts if that is the faulty part.

What is the part that holds the wheel called?

On a construction machine, the wheel is bolted to the hub, which rotates on its bearings around the axle housing "trumpet". The wheel axle, housed inside the axle, drives this hub from the differential. It is also called a half-shaft or axle shaft. On a non-driven axle, the wheel is mounted on a spindle.

What should I do if my wheel bearing is worn?

A bearing that is noisy or has play should be replaced without delay, otherwise it heats up and damages the axle seat. When dismantling, run your finger over this seat: if it is smooth, new bearing and seal are sufficient. If scratched or heat-blued, also replace the wheel axle, or the new bearing will wear out quickly.

What information should I provide to order a wheel axle?

Provide the brand, model, year of manufacture, and serial number of the machine, then the axle position: front or rear axle, left or right side. If possible, include the number of spline teeth, the flange-to-end length, and any stamped reference on the part. A photo of the dismantled axle helps our advisors.
