Articulated dump truck body or rigid dump truck body: which applies to you?

The dump body varies depending on the type of dump truck, and the two are not interchangeable.

On an articulated dump truck — a machine with a broken chassis, 4 or 6 driven wheels — the dump body is mounted on the rear chassis and tilts backward using hydraulic cylinders. Designed for rough terrain and soft ground, it is fitted to machines with capacities from 20 to 40 tonnes, typically used in earthmoving, quarrying, or mining.

On a rigid dump truck — a machine with a monobloc chassis, wide tyres — the dump body is heavier, sized for very heavy loads on hard or semi-hard surfaces. The hydraulic tipping principle is similar, but the volumes and structural reinforcements differ significantly from those of an articulated dump truck.

Before ordering, accurately identify whether your machine is an articulated or rigid dump truck — confusion between the two is the primary cause of ordering errors.

When to replace the dump body rather than repair it

A damaged dump body must be evaluated according to several criteria before deciding between repair and full replacement.

Signs indicating replacement is necessary:

• Structural cracks on the bottom or sides, especially at welds and reinforcement points
• Significant deformation of the upper edge or bottom, typically caused by impact or repeated overloading
• Wear of the bottom exceeding safety thresholds on bodies that have carried abrasive materials (rocks, ores, aggregates)
• Advanced corrosion in moisture retention areas, particularly under the dump body floor
• Tailgate or locking system showing excessive play or repeated failure

Minor repairs (weld build-up, localized reinforcement) may suffice for an isolated defect on an otherwise sound body. However, multiple damages or extensive cracking on a load-bearing area justify a full replacement — the cumulative cost of successive repairs quickly exceeds that of a well-maintained used dump body.

Alternative: buying a complete used articulated dump truck

If your dump truck has multiple mechanical issues beyond the dump body — transmission, engine, axles — simply replacing the body does not solve all faults. In this case, purchasing a complete used articulated dump truck might be a more cost-effective solution than multiple repairs.
