What is a transmission torque converter on construction equipment?

The torque converter is a hydraulic coupling positioned between the engine and the gearbox. It transmits engine torque while absorbing mechanical shocks, allowing the machine to restart under load without stalling. Unlike a dry clutch, it doesn't wear through direct friction but by progressive wear of the vanes and hydraulic seals.

This component is particularly stressed on dump trucks and wheel loaders, which operate in short cycles of loading, transporting, and unloading. On a fully loaded articulated dump truck climbing a slope, the torque converter continuously absorbs changes in engine speed. On dump trucks equipped with Powershift gearboxes, it ensures continuous power delivery regardless of load or terrain slope.

Signs of a faulty transmission torque converter

• Engine speed increases without corresponding machine acceleration
• Noticeable loss of traction under load, especially on inclines or uneven terrain
• Unusual overheating of the transmission oil
• Dull noises or vibrations during acceleration
• Gradual reduction of maximum speed under full load

These symptoms may also indicate issues with the gearbox or the gearbox control valve. A full drivetrain diagnosis is essential before any replacement.
