What is the function of an axle on an earthmoving machine?
The axle transmits driving power to the wheels through the differential and half-axles, while supporting the weight of the machine and its payload. On a high-capacity loader, axles can bear loads reaching several tens of tons, which clearly distinguishes them from automotive or trailer axles.
Axle assemblies on earthmoving vehicles serve to maintain ground contact, support the machine's weight, and transmit motion from the gearbox via the drive shaft and the cardan shaft. The bevel gear is housed inside the axle housing, and the wheel reducers multiply and distribute the driving force to the wheels.
Front axle or rear axle: what's the difference on an earthmoving machine?
On loaders and backhoe loaders, the front axle is usually the steering axle while the rear axle primarily provides propulsion. In 4x4 configurations—common on modern backhoe loaders—both axles are powered. The exact setup depends on the make and model, directly impacting the type of axle to order.

Used bogie axle
A bogie axle consists of two axles mounted in tandem on the same pivoting subframe. It is found on high-capacity dump trucks used in quarries or mines where loads regularly reach 40 to 50 tons. It improves load distribution on the ground and traction over rough terrain.
Used tandem axle
The tandem axle consists of two closely spaced axles working together, as seen on Volvo A35/A40 or Caterpillar 735/740. It distributes the loaded body weight over two successive support points, improving traction and protecting the ground. It is closely associated with an automated Powershift gearbox.
Used walk beam axle
The walk beam axle is mounted on an articulated suspension system allowing it to adapt to ground irregularities independently of the chassis. It maintains continuous wheel contact with the ground and enhances traction in all conditions, notably on Liebherr and Caterpillar loaders.
Used tag axle
The tag axle is a non-driven load-bearing axle found on some high-capacity rigid dump trucks. It supports weight without transmitting power, thus reducing pressure on the ground and stress on the main driven axles.

- Excessive play in steering
