What is the role of the oil cooler?

 An oil cooler is used to dissipate heat from the oil of an oiled part. The hydraulic circuits, the gearboxes and sometimes the diesel engines are equipped with special radiators dedicated to the cooling of the lubricant circuit. Although the main function of the oil is to lubricate the organs in motion, it serves as a heat extractor. In order to cool the oil efficiently, a fin radiator exchanges this heat with the cooling air.

 The radiator consists of two oil tanks connected to two pipes: one for the inlet and one for the outlet. These two flexible rubber hoses are extremely resistant to heat and pressure. In the middle is a network of beams coated with fins which allows, through the passage of air, to cool the oil between the inlet and the outlet. This heat exchange is done by the ambient air. The radiator is generally made of aluminum, or copper, although heavier, but having a higher cooling coefficient.

 When starting the engine of your construction machine, the oil is cold and relatively viscous. To accelerate its rise in temperature the oil cooler is short-circuited by a thermostatic bypass. Until the oil reaches an optimum temperature, the short circuit stops allowing the oil to pass through the cooler.

 When to change your oil cooler?

 It is necessary to replace the radiator when it is leaking, when the pipes are clogged, when the thermostat is not working or when the damper is damaged.
