Used Caterpillar Wheel Reducer

On a wheeled excavator, loader, or dump truck Caterpillar , the wheel reducer is the final stage of the drivetrain: it multiplies the motion just before the wheel and absorbs all the traction effort. A leaking or noisy reducer will eventually immobilize the machine. Codimatra dismantles selected Caterpillar machines and resells their original wheel reducers, inspected in our workshop, with the original part reference and machine details for each unit.

Caterpillar Wheel Reducer: Function and Operation

The wheel reducer receives motion from the wheel shaft, itself driven by the differential and driveshaft. It multiplies torque through a planetary gearset: planetary gears, satellites, and an internal gear ring. This setup reduces rotational speed while increasing torque available at the wheel, easing stress on the rest of the axle. It is found on most wheeled construction equipment. On many Caterpillar wheeled excavators and loaders, the reducer and brake combine into a single wheel assembly, which affects the part reference to order.

From Reducer to Axle: Related Parts

The wheel reducer works in conjunction with the entire axle. Before replacing it, check the wheel hub and its bearings, the wheel shaft and its splines, as well as the axle nose. Upstream, an unbalanced driveshaft causes vibrations that strain the entire driveline. For the whole drivetrain, see our Caterpillar transmission page. Do not confuse this with the Caterpillar swing reducer, which drives an excavator’s turret and requires different part numbers.

Ordering the Correct Wheel Reducer

  • Machine: model, year, and serial number, including prefix.
  • Position: front or rear, left or right side.
  • Caterpillar part number for the full wheel assembly or reducer alone.
  • Brake: reducer with or without integrated brake.
  • Photos of the installed reducer and its nameplate.

Fitting a Used Wheel Reducer

Clean the bearing surfaces and replace seals if their condition is doubtful. Fill the reducer with the oil type and quantity recommended by Caterpillar for your model, then check the level after a few hours of operation. For assemblies with brakes, bleed the brake circuit. Finally, inspect the driveshaft and its universal joints: any play upstream transfers to the reducer. An original reducer installed on a healthy axle will perform as intended by the manufacturer.

Common signs include oil leaks at the hub, noises that change with speed, abnormal heating, or metal shavings in the drained oil. A laboratory oil analysis confirms internal wear: with this result and the full wheel assembly reference, we identify the replacement part.

Often, but not always. Depending on the machine, front and rear or left and right reducers may differ by brake, gear ratio, or mounting. The part number on the piece and the machine’s serial number help determine the correct fit.

Reducers are distinguished by coaxial or parallel shafts with spur, helical, or planetary gears, and angle drive reducers with bevel gears or worm gears. In construction equipment, the wheel reducer is almost always planetary, as is the Caterpillar swing reducer on excavators.

Efficiency varies greatly with reduction ratio and lubrication: it can approach 90% on a low ratio and drop below 50% on a high ratio. A planetary gearset with internal gears, like that in a wheel reducer, offers significantly higher efficiency, which explains its use on construction machines.
