Volvo Hydraulic System: From Pump to Actuators

On a Volvo excavator, the diesel engine drives one or two variable displacement main hydraulic pumps. The valve directs this high-pressure flow to the boom, arm, and bucket cylinders, as well as the swing motor and, via the slewing ring, to the travel gear motors. On a loader or articulated hauler, a dedicated hydraulic pump powers the steering, while a separate circuit manages lifting or the dump body. The oil cooler and filtration keep the Volvo hydraulic system at the correct temperature and clean.

Volvo Hydraulic Oil and Filter: Proper Reassembly

A broken hydraulic pump or motor often leaves particles in the Volvo hydraulic system. Before installing the used part, drain the Volvo hydraulic oil, replace every hydraulic filter, and flush the circuit if contamination has occurred. Also, inspect the oil cooler and hoses thoroughly. Installing an original part in a clean system restores factory flow and pressure settings, ensuring long-lasting service.
