Used Liebherr Wheel Reducer

A wheeled excavator A316 leaving an oil stain near the rim, a L550 loader with a noisy wheel under load: on Liebherr machines, the wheel reducer operates under tough conditions and eventually wears out. Codimatra dismantles Liebherr wheeled excavators and loaders, then offers their original wheel reducers, inspected in our workshop and matched to the part reference and the donor machine model. Other brands are grouped in our wheel reducer range.

Liebherr Wheel Reducer for Construction Machinery and Vehicles

On a Liebherr wheeled excavator or loader, torque leaves the gearbox via the Liebherr drive shaft, passes through the axle, and reaches each hub. Inside the wheel, the reducer then slows the rotational speed through a planetary gear set made of a sun gear, planet gears, and a ring gear. Its reduction ratio simultaneously increases the output torque: the engine’s power converts into traction force at the ground. This setup keeps shafts and axle compact since the maximum output torque appears only at the chain’s end. However, the reducer’s gears endure the strain of every uphill start and push into piled material.

Liebherr Wheel Reducers in Stock

  • A300 Series Wheeled Excavators: A309, A311, A312, A314, and A316, including Litronic versions.
  • A900 Series Wheeled Excavators: from A902 to A934B.
  • Material Handling: LH22M material handler excavator.
  • Wheeled Loaders: L510, L550, L554, L556 XPower, L564, L566, L576, and L580.
  • Position: front and rear reducers, left or right side.

Liebherr Wheeled Excavators A309 to A934B

The stock covers A309, A311, A312 and A312 Litronic, A314 and A314 Litronic, A316 and A316 Litronic, A902 and A902 Litronic, A904, A904 C and A904 C Litronic, A912, A912 Compact and A912 Litronic, A914, A922 and A922 Litronic, A924, and A934B models. For these Liebherr excavators, the front axle oscillates and steers, while the rear axle is fixed: the two might not have the same reducer. Variants within a generation, for example between an A904 and an A904 C, may also alter the ratio or mounting points.

Liebherr Wheeled Loaders L510 to L580

  • Compact and Mid-size Loaders: L510, L550, and L554.
  • XPower Range: L556 XPower with power-split transmission.
  • Large Models: L564, L566, L576, and L580.
  • Front or Rear Axle: to specify; reducers on the same loader can differ.
  • Braking: depending on the axle, brake discs are located near the hub, changing the assembly’s reference.

Part Reference: The Key to Compatibility

Two Liebherr machines with the same name can have different axles depending on the year and version. The part reference, stamped on the housing or on a riveted plate, is decisive. Note it before ordering, along with the machine’s serial number. If the plate is unreadable, take pictures of the reducer from several angles and note the number of wheel studs: our technicians often identify the part reference from these details.

Reducer, Axle Shaft, and Hub: What to Check Before Replacing

  • Hub: inspect the Liebherr wheel hub and its bearings.
  • Shaft: verify the splines of the Liebherr wheel shaft driving the sun gear.
  • Axle Nose: noises focused on the axle usually indicate the Liebherr axle nose.
  • Oil: check color, burnt smell, and metal particles on the magnetic plug.
  • Brakes: a dragging brake warms the hub, slows the wheel’s rotation, and can mimic a seized reducer.

Fitting a Liebherr Wheel Reducer

Thoroughly clean the axle seating and replace the hub’s seal. Once fitted, fill the reducer with the axle oil recommended by Liebherr, observing the level plug position indicated in the manual. Tighten fixings to the specified torque, perform a few no-load movements, then check the oil level and for any leaks. Liebherr gearboxes, axles, and shafts are all featured on our Liebherr Transmission page.

A reducer decreases the input rotational speed and proportionally increases the output torque, minus losses. On a Liebherr machine, the wheel reducer enables a fast-spinning hydraulic motor or gearbox to drive a wheel slowly, with the force needed to push material or climb a loaded ramp.

Four families are most common: spur or helical gears, planetary gear sets, bevel gear angle drives, and worm gear assemblies. Construction machinery almost always uses planetary gears in the hubs because they provide a high ratio in a compact size. Worm gears are more typical on industrial machines.

Efficiency depends on the ratio and worm helix angle: the higher the reduction, the more friction between worm and gear lowers efficiency, to the point some setups become irreversible. This is one reason why construction machinery prefers planetary gears, whose per-stage efficiency remains very high and which better withstand traction shocks.

Generally, no. The A300 and A900 series belong to different generations of Liebherr excavators and their axles differ in ratios, mountings, or brakes. Only comparing part references confirms an exchange. Send us the part reference and serial number; we verify before shipment.

The wheel reducer multiplies a wheel’s rotation inside the hub. The swing reducer rotates the excavator's turret, driven by the Liebherr hydraulic swing motor engaging the slew ring. These two reducers share no parts.

Use the axle oil specified in the machine’s manual, with the viscosity and standards required by Liebherr. When oil-immersed brakes share the housing, the oil must also be compatible with the brake discs. Improper oil leads to brake judder and accelerates gear wear.
