Question 1

What is the role of a reducer?

Accepted Answer

A reducer decreases the input rotational speed and proportionally increases the output torque, minus losses. On a Liebherr machine, the wheel reducer enables a fast-spinning hydraulic motor or gearbox to drive a wheel slowly, with the force needed to push material or climb a loaded ramp.

Question 2

What are the different types of speed reducers?

Accepted Answer

Four families are most common: spur or helical gears, planetary gear sets, bevel gear angle drives, and worm gear assemblies. Construction machinery almost always uses planetary gears in the hubs because they provide a high ratio in a compact size. Worm gears are more typical on industrial machines.

Question 3

What is the efficiency of a worm gear reducer?

Accepted Answer

Efficiency depends on the ratio and worm helix angle: the higher the reduction, the more friction between worm and gear lowers efficiency, to the point some setups become irreversible. This is one reason why construction machinery prefers planetary gears, whose per-stage efficiency remains very high and which better withstand traction shocks.

Question 4

Can a Liebherr A900 excavator reducer fit an A300?

Accepted Answer

Generally, no. The A300 and A900 series belong to different generations of Liebherr excavators and their axles differ in ratios, mountings, or brakes. Only comparing part references confirms an exchange. Send us the part reference and serial number; we verify before shipment.

Question 5

Liebherr wheel reducer and swing reducer: what is the difference?

Accepted Answer

The wheel reducer multiplies a wheel’s rotation inside the hub. The swing reducer rotates the excavator's turret, driven by the Liebherr hydraulic swing motor engaging the slew ring. These two reducers share no parts.

Question 6

Which oil should be used in a Liebherr wheel reducer?

Accepted Answer

Use the axle oil specified in the machine’s manual, with the viscosity and standards required by Liebherr. When oil-immersed brakes share the housing, the oil must also be compatible with the brake discs. Improper oil leads to brake judder and accelerates gear wear.
