Measuring a Volvo Cylinder

• Machine: model, series, and serial number of the machine.
• Function: steering, lifting, bucket, boom, left or right side.
• Volvo reference stamped or engraved on the cylinder body.
• Dimensions: length between rod eye centers when extended and retracted, rod diameter, cylinder barrel diameter.
• Mountings: type of ball joint or clevis, position and size of bolt holes.

Seals, Rod, Jerky Movements: Diagnose Before Ordering

Not all faults require a full replacement. A slight seal leak is often fixed by replacing the seal kit installed by your mechanic—provided the rod is sound. But a bent or deeply scored rod, an oval cylinder barrel, or a cracked piston condemns the cylinder. Jerky movements indicate either air in the circuit or internal leaks between chambers. In the latter case, piston seals are the issue, and an original used cylinder is often the fastest solution.

Dump Truck or Loader: Functional Checks

• Bucket cylinder: bucket drops on its own when raised, or slow lift under full load.
• Steering cylinders: slower turning to one side, ball joint play, oil leaks at fittings.
• Lift arm cylinder: arm does not hold height, engine stopped.
• Dipper arm cylinder: bucket opens under digging pressure.
• Axle lock and suspension: oil traces on the axle, abnormal response under load.

Putting a Used Volvo Cylinder Back in Service

First check the machine’s pins and bushings: a worn pin quickly wears the ball joints of a rebuilt cylinder. Once installed and hoses reconnected, operate the system slowly, unloaded and through the full stroke to bleed air. Grease the joints at installation and again after the first hours: a dry ball joint damages bushings quickly. Then check the oil level and for leaks.
