Caterpillar Undercarriage: How It Wears

The sprocket drives the track chain, the rollers guide it and support the machine, while the idler wheel and tension cylinder maintain proper track sag. All these parts wear together, exposed to soil, sand, or rock. An overly tight track accelerates wear on sprocket teeth and bushings, while a loose track can cause derailment. Caterpillar offers undercarriage versions such as General Duty, Heavy Duty, and HDXL, tailored to abrasion and impact conditions.

Measuring Wear Before Ordering

  • Machine: model, year, and serial number of the equipment.
  • Track: pitch measured across several links, link height, and pad condition.
  • Rollers and idler wheel: diameter of the rolling surface and flange condition.
  • Sprocket: tooth profile, number of teeth, and mounting holes.
  • Wear sensor: on recent machines, the Cat track wear sensor (CTWS) gives a wear percentage to note alongside the part reference.

Sprocket and Track: Replace at the Right Time

A worn sprocket quickly damages a good-condition track, and vice versa. Always pair replacement parts with similar wear levels, chosen based on your measurements or wear sensor reports. In harsh conditions, such as rocky or highly abrasive soil, check wear more frequently. After installation, adjust track tension following Caterpillar’s recommendations for your model and terrain, and ensure there are no leaks on the rollers.
