Vibrations increasing with speed, a clicking sound at each gear reversal, a hot universal joint: on a loader, dump truck or dozer Caterpillar , these symptoms often point to the drive shaft line. At Codimatra, every Caterpillar drive shaft comes from an on-site dismantled machine: original parts, workshop-checked, identified by the donor machine and its position. To compare with other brands, explore our range of used drive shafts.

Caterpillar Drive Shaft: Connecting the Transmission to the Axles
At the output of a Caterpillar transmission, power must bridge the gap to the axles while they oscillate or the chassis articulates. The drive shaft absorbs these movements: its universal joints accommodate angle variations, and its slip yoke adjusts for length changes. In large machines, the line is divided into several sections held by intermediate bearings. Each section has its specific length, flanges, and reference.
Caterpillar Drive Shafts in Stock

- Dump Trucks: articulated 725 to 740, rigid 771D, 772, and 773.
- Dozers: D4H to D7R, including several XL and LGP versions.
- Wheeled Excavators: M313D, M316C, M316D, M318C, M318D, M320F, and M325C.
- Other Equipment: compactors CB535B and PS300B, telescopic TH63.
Caterpillar Wheel Loaders 918M to 988G
Our stock covers 918M, 924G, 938H, 950G, 950H, 950K, 966K, 966M XE, 972K, 972M, 980H, 980K, 980M, 988B, and 988G. Typically, a loader has one shaft leading to the front axle and another to the rear axle, sometimes complemented by an intermediate shaft. Their lengths and flange hole counts differ. Between a 950G and a 950K, or between a 980H and a 980M, the drive shaft line evolved with the transmission; the reference on your part remains the best starting point.
Dump Trucks, Dozers, and Crawler Loaders
- Articulated Dump Trucks: 725, 730C2, 735, 735B, and 740, with front, intermediate, and tandem shafts.
- Rigid Dump Trucks: 771D, 772, and 773, main shaft to rear axle.
- Dozers: D4H, D5, D5H, D5H II, D6C, D6H, D6H XL, D6M, D6M XL, D6N LGP, D6R, D6R XL, D6T XW, D7G, and D7R.
- Crawler Loaders: 953C, 955K, 963C, and 977K.
- Associated Components: universal joints and seals on our used Caterpillar universal joint page.
Caterpillar Dozers: A Short Yet Highly Stressed Shaft
On a dozer, the drive shaft is often short, placed between the engine or Caterpillar torque converter and the transmission. It transmits all pushing force, with torque peaks at each blade engagement. Universal joints endure more stress here than on a loader, especially if lubrication intervals are long. Also check the transmission mounts: a sagging mount misaligns the shaft and accelerates universal joint wear.
Broken or Worn Drive Shaft: What to Inspect
- Universal Joints: radial play, stiff spots, heat marks on cups.
- Slip Yoke: spline wear and condition of boot or seal.
- Tube: straightness, dents, balancing weights still attached.
- Flanges: diameter, number and spacing of bolt holes.
- Length: measured between flange faces with slip yoke compressed.
Installing a Used Drive Shaft
Ensure yoke alignment at both ends: a misphased shaft vibrates even with healthy universal joints. Clean flange faces, tighten bolts to the torque recommended by Caterpillar, and replace bolts if specified in the manual. Then lubricate universal joints and slip yoke until clean grease appears. After a few hours of operation, recheck bolt tightening and absence of vibration at operating speed. The transmission, torque converter, and axles also have dedicated pages: Caterpillar transmission.
Preparing Your Drive Shaft Request
- Equipment: Caterpillar designation and serial number from the chassis plate.
- Section: front, rear, intermediate, or tandem shaft.
- Measurements: length between flanges and tube diameter.
- Flanges: type, number of holes, and centering diameter.
- Photos: universal joints, slip yoke, and identification plate if available.
Balancing: A Key Point for Dump Trucks
On an articulated or rigid dump truck, the drive shaft spins fast and long, loaded or unloaded. Even a small imbalance causes vibrations that wear bearings, supports, and universal joints. Therefore, the balancing weights welded to the tube must never be removed. A used original shaft kept with its weights and checked for straightness retains the factory-applied balancing.

The price of a used Caterpillar drive shaft varies depending on the machine, shaft length, position, and universal joint condition. A shaft from a large loader or rigid dump truck costs more than a short shaft from a compact dozer. Some parts have prices displayed as-is on the website; for others, send us the reference and model to receive a quote.
Common symptoms include vibrations that increase with speed, a clicking noise when shifting directions, or noticeable play in a universal joint. A warped tube, a sticking slip yoke, or rust around universal joint cups confirm the diagnosis. With the machine stationary, a visual inspection beneath the chassis usually suffices.
In construction workshops, it’s often called a universal joint or cardan shaft. The term technically refers to the articulated joint at each end, but usage extends it to the entire part. It's also known as the propeller shaft, and in English documents, referred to as a "drive shaft." For ordering, the Caterpillar catalog number remains the most reliable reference.
Yes. Codimatra offers Caterpillar drive shafts dismantled from identified machines and thoroughly checked in our workshop: universal joints, slip yokes, straightness, and flanges. You receive original parts matching the manufacturer’s specifications. Provide us the model, serial number, and shaft position; we confirm compatibility before shipping.
