Used Caterpillar Engine and Engine Parts

An alternator that no longer charges on a 966H loader, a cracked radiator on a 320 excavator: on a Caterpillar machine, a faulty engine part is enough to immobilize it. Codimatra dismantles selected Caterpillar machines and resells their original engine parts, workshop-tested: alternators, engine blocks, radiators, starters, and turbos. Complete internal combustion engines are also offered, sold as-is.

Used Caterpillar Engine: Sale of Original Parts

Each used Caterpillar engine part comes from a machine dismantled by us, with its model, year, and original reference. You get the original factory fitting specifications, without using aftermarket parts. Before sale, the part is cleaned, visually inspected, and tested according to its function: radiator sealing, alternator charge, starter rotation. For a complete Caterpillar engine, see our Used Caterpillar Internal Combustion Engines page: these engines are sold as-is, with details recorded at dismantling.

Caterpillar Engine Parts: What We Dismantle

  • Cooling: water and air radiators, expansion tanks, water pumps, fans, and fan motors.
  • Electrical: alternators and starters.
  • Engine block and mobile attachments: engine blocks, crankshafts, camshafts, connecting rods, and flywheels.
  • Intake and exhaust: turbos, intercoolers, air filter brackets, and silencers.

Caterpillar Diesel Engines 3306, 3406, 3208: Applications

Caterpillar machines from the 1980s to 2000s mostly use engines from the 3300 series (3304, 3306), 3400 series (3406, 3408, 3412), the V8 3208, and the 3116 and 3126. From the 2000s, ACERT technology introduced the C7, C9, C13, C15, and C18 engines, followed by newer generations meeting recent emission standards. These diesel engines equip construction, bulldozers, power generators, and many industrial applications. A single machine may switch from one engine series to another: Caterpillar engines should always be identified by their data plate, never just by the machine's name.

Caterpillar Engines C9, C13, C15, C18: Technical Manual

  • Engine plate: model (C9, C13, 3306, etc.), serial number, and arrangement number.
  • Machine: model, year, and serial number of the equipment.
  • Part reference engraved or tagged on the part to be replaced.
  • Technical manual: engine power, displacement, number of cylinders, and parts catalog number.
  • Photos of the installed part, its connections, and its plate.

Caterpillar Bulldozer, Loader and Excavator Engines

Our stock covers a large part of the Caterpillar range. For bulldozers, from D5H to D8L, including D6H, D6N, and D6T. For wheeled loaders, from 924G to 988B, including 950K, 966H, 966K, 972M, and 980K; and for tracked loaders, models 953, 963, and 973. Excavators range from 307B to 350, plus wheeled excavators M312 to M320F. Also included are dump trucks 725 to 775B, compactors, and the TH220B telescopic handler. Each engine part remains linked to its original machine.

Caterpillar Hydraulic Engines: Not to be Confused

  • Internal combustion engine: the diesel that powers the machine, covered on this page.
  • Travel motor: the Caterpillar hydraulic travel motor drives an excavator’s tracks.
  • Swing motor: the hydraulic swing motor rotates the turret.
  • Propulsion motor: on wheeled excavators and compactors, drives the wheels or drum.
  • Fan: on many machines, the cooling fan is powered by a hydraulic motor.

Caterpillar Oil and Engine Maintenance on Reassembly

A used engine part is installed on a clean system. After turbo or block failure, change the Caterpillar engine oil, replace filters, and check cooling: remaining particles in the system would damage the reinstalled part. Use the oil and coolant type specified for your engine. Installation should be done by your mechanic: Codimatra sells the part without maintenance or engine repair services.

The C13 is an inline six-cylinder engine of about 12.5 liters, from the ACERT generation. It has a good reputation on construction equipment when maintained regularly. For used parts, key factors are operating hours, diesel quality, and maintenance history.

No official ranking settles this. Caterpillar engines from the 3306 and 3406 series are often noted for their longevity on machines and trucks. In reality, engine reliability depends first on maintenance, oil quality, air filtration, and working conditions.

Among machines, one of the largest is the C175-20, a twenty-cylinder engine that powers the 797F mining dump truck. In power generation and marine sectors, Caterpillar offers even larger engines, notably under the MaK brand. These engines are beyond the scope of machines dismantled by Codimatra.

Caterpillar designs and manufactures its diesel and gas engines in its own plants. The group also owns several brands: Perkins in Peterborough, UK, which produces several small Cat engines; MaK for medium-speed marine engines; MWM for gas engines; and Solar Turbines for turbines. For a used part, the engine plate remains the only reliable criterion.

The price of a C18 depends on its condition, hours, version, and equipment: a complete engine does not cost the same as a single engine part. At Codimatra, engines and engine parts are sold as-is, with prices shown on each listing or by quotation, including transport.

The number in Caterpillar C engines indicates approximate displacement in liters: about 7 liters for the C7, 9 for the C9, 12.5 for the C13, 15 for the C15, and 18 for the C18. The C32, a 32-liter V12 engine, powers large mining machines and marine applications. The older 3306 and 3406 engines displace around 10.5 and 14.6 liters.

Yes, these older engines still power many machines in service. We offer their used engine parts depending on availability at dismantling. Provide us with the model found on the plate and the machine’s serial number: our technicians will check availability.

Sometimes, when two machines share the same engine and arrangement. Compatibility is verified on the engine plate and the machine’s serial number, never on the machine model name alone. Our technicians confirm compatibility before shipping.
