What is the role of the hydraulic pump?

The hydraulic pump converts the mechanical energy from the combustion engine into pressurized oil flow. On recent Volvo machines, the main pump is variable displacement: it adjusts flow to match operator’s requested movements. This flow powers the hydraulic cylinders and motors of the machine: excavator arm and bucket, dump truck bed, loader steering and lift arms. Without a functioning pump, the machine loses speed, power and precision.

How can I tell if a hydraulic pump is defective?

Common signs include loss of force or speed in movements, unusual whistling or knocking noises, oil overheating quickly, and leaks on the pump body. Have your mechanic confirm the diagnosis, then contact Codimatra with the pump reference to find a compatible spare part.

What is the lifespan of a hydraulic pump?

The lifespan mainly depends on operating hours, oil quality and filtration. Contaminated oil or clogged filters cause premature wear of pistons and plate shoes. With proper maintenance, the pump accompanies the machine for many years; at end of life, a tested used pump limits refurbishment costs.

Do you offer hydraulic pumps for tractors?

Our stock consists of pumps dismantled from construction equipment: dump trucks, loaders and excavators. For a hydraulic pump for agricultural or road tractors, please provide the stamped reference on the pump and the machine model. Our technicians check if a pump with the same or compatible reference is available among our used spare parts.

What is the origin of Volvo hydraulic excavators?

Volvo Construction Equipment developed its hydraulic excavator range from the Swedish manufacturer Åkerman, acquired in the early 1990s, then the Samsung excavator business in South Korea, acquired in 1998. The current EC and EW excavators come from these two lineages, explaining the diversity of pumps fitted across series.
