Used Liebherr Boom Cylinder

A boom that lowers on its own during a pause, a rod marked with scratches, a leak restarting at the nose seal: on a Liebherr excavator, the boom cylinder operates under high pressure and eventually wears out. Codimatra dismantles Liebherr crawler excavators, wheeled excavators, and material handling machines, then offers their original boom cylinders, workshop-tested and matched to the donor machine model. Across all brands, discover our range of boom cylinders.

The Liebherr Boom Cylinder, a key lifting component

The boom cylinder raises and lowers the boom, along with all its equipment: the arm, bucket, and load. On most excavators, two cylinders work in parallel, mounted between the turret and the boom base. They work together with the Liebherr arm cylinder and the Liebherr bucket cylinder. Many versions include a safety valve screwed onto the barrel, which holds the boom in case a hose fails—an essential feature for load lifting.

Which lifting cylinders are available for Liebherr models A902, A904, A912, and A914?

  • A902: boom lifting cylinders, identifiable by the excavator’s serial number.
  • A904: A904, A904 C, and A904 C Litronic, depending on the generation.
  • A912: A912 and A912 Litronic, including material handling versions.
  • A914: A914 Compact, with reduced turning radius.
  • Other wheeled excavators: A308, A310B, A311 Litronic, A312, A314, A316, and A924.

What types of boom cylinders are available for Liebherr excavators?

First, there are lifting cylinders for one-piece booms, mounted in pairs. Two-piece adjustable booms add a positioning cylinder to modify the angle between the two elements. Material handling machines use longer cylinders adapted for large reaches, often fitted with safety valves. Lastly, HD or HDSL versions receive reinforced cylinders to withstand demolition forces. Each type has its own pins and stroke length.

How to identify a Liebherr boom cylinder

  • Machine: model designation, chassis or boom variant, and serial number.
  • Marking: Liebherr reference stamped on the barrel or cylinder plate.
  • Dimensions: closed cylinder length, effective stroke, rod and barrel diameters.
  • Attachments: pin diameters for foot and head, clevis widths.
  • Equipment: presence of a safety valve or end-of-stroke damper.

Refitting a used boom cylinder

Support the boom on blocks before removing the cylinder, then release the circuit pressure. When reinstalling, check the condition of the pins and bushings: a healthy cylinder on ovalized joints will quickly wear its seals. Purge air by slowly moving the boom through its full travel under no load. Then check the seal and hold in position with the boom raised after a few minutes engine off. For the boom structure itself, see our Liebherr boom page.

The price depends on the excavator model, cylinder dimensions, version, and condition. A large crawler excavator cylinder is not valued the same as a compact wheeled excavator cylinder. Some stock is priced as-is; otherwise, call us at 05 53 96 16 43 with the reference number for a quote.

A hydraulic cylinder converts oil pressure into linear force. Oil sent to one side of the piston extends the rod; sent to the other side, it retracts it. On an excavator, boom cylinders are double-acting and raise or lower the boom under the operator's continuous control. Piston and nose seals separate the two chambers.

Liebherr is the family name of the founder, Hans Liebherr, who created the company in 1949 in Germany around an easy-to-assemble tower crane. The group then expanded to hydraulic excavators, loaders, mobile cranes, and components. Thus, the name is not an acronym but a family brand.

The Liebherr family. After Hans Liebherr, his children Isolde and Willi Liebherr ran the group, which is now transitioning to the third generation. This continuity explains strong integration: cylinders, pumps, and hydraulic motors are largely designed in-house. Therefore, an original used part retains the specifications intended for the machine.

There is no official ranking. At Liebherr, the largest cylinders equip the mining excavators of the R 9000 range, far beyond construction site excavators. On an R954 or R964, the boom cylinder is already a heavy and bulky part: plan for pallet transport and suitable lifting equipment upon delivery.
