What is a wheel shaft called?

Depending on manufacturers and workshops, the part is called half shaft, axle shaft, planetary shaft, or half driveshaft. All terms refer to the part connecting the differential to the hub or wheel reducer. On a steerable axle, the shaft includes a universal joint and is sometimes called a driveshaft.

What is the role of the driveshaft?

The driveshaft transmits rotation from the gearbox or transfer case to the axles. Its cross joints absorb angle variations, and its sliding part compensates for length changes during articulation or axle oscillation. Without it, the engine's torque would not reach the wheels.

What are the different parts of a wheel?

On a construction machine, a wheel consists of the tire, rim with its mounting studs, and a hub mounted on bearings. Behind, there is the often planetary wheel reducer, the wheel shaft driving it, and on many axles, the brake. Each component wears at its own pace and is inspected during disassembly.

How can you tell if a Caterpillar wheel shaft is broken?

The clearest sign is a wheel that no longer transmits drive while the other side turns normally. A metallic knock, metal particles in the axle oil, or a freely spinning wheel with the machine stalled confirm the diagnosis. Opening the reducer then shows where the shaft has broken.

Should bearings be replaced when changing the wheel shaft?

It is recommended when the shaft has broken or developed play: hub and reducer bearings have endured the same shocks. Also check seals, as dust ingress might have occurred. Installing a new shaft on worn bearings significantly reduces service life.
