Used Caterpillar Cylinder

The cylinder is at the heart of every movement of a Caterpillar machine: it raises the boom, closes the bucket, steers the loader, or tilts the blade. When a rod gets scratched or a seal leaks, the machine loses power and precision. Codimatra dismantles selected Caterpillar machines and resells their original cylinders, inspected in our workshop: boom cylinders, arm cylinders, bucket cylinders, as well as lifting, steering, and blade cylinders. You get the original Cat specifications without any manufacturing delays.

Caterpillar Hydraulic Cylinder: Function and Wear

In a machine's hydraulic system, the cylinder converts the oil pressure delivered by the valve into linear force. It endures repeated shocks, dust, and significant temperature fluctuations. Wear points are always the same: rod and piston seals, rod surface condition, bushings, and ball joints. An original Caterpillar cylinder maintains its factory diameters, stroke, and mountings: the simplest way to replace it without modifications.

How to Identify a Caterpillar Cylinder: Essential Measurements

  • Machine: model, year, and serial number of the equipment.
  • Function and position: boom, arm, bucket, left or right side.
  • Caterpillar reference number stamped on the cylinder body.
  • Dimensions: closed center-to-center distance, stroke, rod diameter, and bore diameter.
  • Mountings and connections: clevis, ball joint or trunnion, position of ports.

Caterpillar Cylinder Seals or Hydraulic Seal Kit?

A rod seal leak doesn't always mean the cylinder must be replaced. If the rod is intact and the tube is free of scratches, a hydraulic cylinder seal kit applied by a specialized workshop may suffice. However, a pitted, bent rod or damaged chrome plating will quickly destroy replacement seals. In such cases, a used original cylinder inspected in our workshop is usually the fastest solution. Codimatra sells complete cylinders: consult our technicians before making your choice.

Caterpillar Steering Cylinder: What to Check

  • Ball joints and pins: play at both ends, condition of bushings on the frame.
  • Rod: scratches, pitting, or impact marks in the working area.
  • Sealing: leaks at the rod seal or fittings.
  • Stroke: full steering range both sides, smooth operation.
  • Reference: our Caterpillar steering cylinders are organized by original machine type.

Proper Installation of a Used Cylinder

Before installation, check the condition of the machine’s pins and bushings: an ovalized pin quickly damages the ball joints of a fitted cylinder. Install the cylinder with the rod retracted, connect clean hoses, then purge air by performing multiple slow cycles without load. Then check the hydraulic oil level and ensure fittings are leak-free. A correctly mounted original cylinder will perform as Caterpillar specified.

The most common types are the single-acting cylinder, which pushes in one direction and returns via spring or gravity; the double-acting cylinder, which works in both directions; and the telescopic cylinder with multiple stages. On Caterpillar machines, most equipment and steering cylinders are double-acting.

There is no official ranking. The most powerful cylinders equip industrial presses, engineering structures, or exceptional lifting sites, with capacities of several thousand tons. On construction machinery, the boom cylinders of large mining excavators are among the largest.

There is no single manufacturer: several French companies produce industrial and custom hydraulic cylinders. For a Caterpillar machine, original cylinders are designed by the manufacturer and bear its reference number. This reference is what allows you to find the correct used part.

Common signs include oil leakage at the rod seal, a scratched or pitted rod, uncontrolled downward movement under load, or loss of force. Have your mechanic inspect the cylinder, then send us its reference and measurements.

Sometimes, when two machines share the same reference number. Compatibility is verified based on the reference stamped on the cylinder and the machine’s serial number, never based solely on the model name. Our technicians confirm compatibility before shipment.
