What is the purpose of an excavator's counterweight?

It balances the machine against the load lifted at the end of the arm. Placed at the rear of the turret, it returns the center of gravity above the undercarriage and prevents tipping forward. Its weight directly determines the lifting capacity specified by the manufacturer.

Can a counterweight be added to a mini excavator?

Yes, if the manufacturer allows it: some models accept an optional bolt-on additional counterweight. Adding unapproved ballast overloads the slew ring and turret, and makes the machine non-compliant with its load chart. Check your model's options with the serial number.

How much does an excavator counterweight weigh?

It ranges from a few hundred kilos on a mini excavator to several tons on excavators of 20 tons and above. The exact weight is listed in the manufacturer's documentation or the part sheet. It also affects transport: beyond a few hundred kilos, plan lifting equipment for delivery.
