Tandem compactors, for what applications?

With their double vibrating cylinders, these machines are designed for earthmoving or levelling. Mainly used for compacting binders such as asphalt. Asphalt is a mixture of gravel and sand, used in the construction of virtually all roads and pavements. It is laid when hot and hardens when cold, using a screed to keep the heat in. Once laid, it can be levelled with hand tools or a grader, which is more efficient (for wide freeways, for example). This is precisely where heavy tandem compactors come into play, as in addition to applying the roller's mass, they can vibrate their logs thanks to a hydraulic vibration motor. Smaller models of ball compactors can be used for one-off repairs or for urban works, parking lots, cycle paths...

According to the GTR (Guide des Terrassements Routiers), tandem compactors are Vti for vibrating tandem.

What parts make up a twin drum compactor?

There are several main parts to a tandem compactor. First, there's a section containing motor and hydraulic components. Of course, there's the front ball and the rear ball, both of which are linked to the chassis by a joint. This joint enables the balls to be turned, giving them greater amplitude, and allows them to work in an offset position for greater surface area and to avoid the formation of lines. Last but not least, the compactor cab, similar to the cabs of other construction machines, features a swivel seat and provides comfort for the operator, to avoid excessive vibration from the logs. The logs are equipped with scrapers and a sprinkler system for cleaning. To facilitate maintenance, the leading brands on the market ensure that all parts are easily accessible from the ground.
