The grader was once towed to a tractor, then became self-propelled by adding a diesel engine and a transmission tandem.

The grader consists of a central beam supporting the orientation crown of the work blade. A system of allows the movement of the crown blade assembly at 360° on a horizontal plane, 80° on a vertical plane and 60° on a lateral plane.

For light earthworks the grader is equipped with a discharge blade at the front of a scarifier at the rear. The frame can be "broken" to create a wider working path for the blade. The front axle may or may not tilt its wheels vertically. The grader is sometimes used for agricultural purposes, or in most cases a grader blade can be seen on an agricultural tractor.

All these tools make the grader, the most suitable public works machine for the work of talus, shaping material in a variety of forms, shaping of raceways.

The grader is present on highway construction sites for shaping of upper layers, on building construction platforms for shaping streets and even in quarry for track maintenance.

With a powerful diesel engine up to 500 hp for the most powerful, the graders are equipped with transmission by protected chains in tandems. The cab is largely glazed to clear the driver’s view, the windscreen is tilted backwards to allow better visibility of the working area located as close to the cab. It can be lowered to work under the bridges.

The controls today are made by hydraulic joysticks but still many models of grader are equipped with levers that allow to maneuver the whole blade chassis. It is a real piano on which the pilot must dial his movements to get The speed of movement is a characteristic of the grader going up to 50 km/ h the grader must be able to perform fast back and forth maneuvers to increase its productivity.
