Wheel compactors: for what types of work and soils?

This machine is reserved for finish compaction. It is very useful in the road construction industry for compacting the last layer of asphalt mix. Asphalt is a gravel and sand binder used in the construction of virtually all roads and pavements. Pneumatic tire rollers are used as the last stage in the compaction process, after a vibratory ball tandem compactor, for example. These compactors exert a weight contributed by each wheel and the ballast, which compacts the soil by static action.

According to the GTR (Guide des Terrassements Routiers), tire compactors are Pi. With 3 classes according to wheel load (P1: 25 and 40 kn, P2: 40 and 60 kn, P3: 60kn).

What parts make up a tire compactor?

There are several main parts to a tire compactor. In addition to the essential technical parts such as the engine and hydraulic components, there are of course the two drive trains. Then, of course, there are the two sets of tires, with a section for inserting ballast. Finally, tire compactor manufacturers have taken it upon themselves to design pneumatic compactors with a large, comfortable cab offering good visibility over the area to be compacted, and ensuring greater safety.
