Two types of sheepsfoot compactor

There are two categories of sheepsfoot compactor. There's the compactor with 4 sheepsfoot wheels and the compactor with a sheepsfoot cylinder and tires. The first, with its 4 toothed wheels, is widely used in waste collection centers, where its segments crush and bury waste. To spread the masses of waste evenly and compact them better, these construction machines are generally equipped with a large blade at the front.  These compactors have a sturdy chassis and a hermetically sealed cab to enable them to work in recycling centers.

The second, with a single cylinder, is similar to a single-ball compactor, except that the ball has a tamper foot.

The tamper foot compactor is used to compact a very special type of soil.

This public works equipment takes its name from the fact that it reproduces almost the same compaction as a flock of sheep on the ground. The knives on the ball shear the soil to compact it. This cylinder is designed to compact the loosest soils, such as clayey sand, for use as a subgrade or backfill for example. The purpose of this compactor is to provide the ground with bearing capacity to enable even the heaviest vehicles and machinery to move without fear. The soil can also be compacted to protect pipes and other networks from the elements. This type of padfoot compactor is particularly useful on soil containing fine aggregate. Compaction will improve soil density to avoid the risk of subsidence or machines getting bogged down. Soil is more or less cohesive depending on its water content. The sheepsfoot compactor is best suited to wet soils, and is used for surface compaction in the construction of dams and embankments.
