New consumption standard for telescopic handlers
Both users and telescopic manufacturers will be able to measure the consumption of their machines in a new way. Focus on the EN 16796-4 standard.
A standard that measures the energy efficiency of telescopic handlers of all brands
Thanks to very precise measurement methods and technical procedures to be followed established by a standardization committee, construction equipment manufacturers will be able to provide the same values. A godsend for all telescopic users who, in addition to comparing capacities and characteristics, will be able to compare the consumption of telescopic handlers from different brands such as Manitou, Caterpillar or JCB using a common reference system. This standard should improve the estimation of telescopic handlers' consumption according to their dedicated activity. Unfortunately, this standard does not apply to rotating trolleys.
A calculation of consumption according to the type of activity
This standard published on 27 March 2019 according to AFNOR requires four consumption values resulting from a different procedure. The telescopic or manuscopic, considered as an off-road truck, will have to undergo 4 consumption evaluation tests.
- Maximum speed driving without any load
- Pallet handling, for buyers using them for high-rise handling of stocks and other loads. This use is the closest to what is done in agriculture, as forks can be used to handle hay bales.
- Bulk material discharge with a bucket, to load and unload with a telescopic arm.
- And finally a test of the engine at idle, in static, placed on its stabilizers.
Additional tests but this will make it easier for the buyer to make comparisons, because nowadays, price is not the only criterion of choice, consumption is also to be taken into account. Manufacturers will also be able to highlight innovative tools on their various new machines that reduce consumption. These include Stop & Start but also future hybrid transmission chains.
Equipment and spare parts dedicated to telescopic handlers at Codimatra
Codimatra, a company specialized in original spare parts, can provide you with telescopic forklift truck parts but also second-hand telescopic handlers of different categories, such as rotating telescopic handlers.
It is hoped that this new standard will help to clarify the relationship between the different telescopic models and the different brands of machine manufacturers. However, the tests may be carried out by the manufacturers themselves or they may choose to use an independent body for transparency purposes. Thanks to accessories such as a basket, this machine has become indispensable for both lifting and handling work.
