Codimatra participates in Sim 2019
Focus on the latest electric machines !
The hybrid and electric machines present at Bauma 2019 prove that manufacturers are increasingly interested in this market. Codimatra, supplier of second-hand parts and public works equipment, focuses on electric construction machinery.
The delivery of an electric excavator to French construction sites!
SPAC (Société parisienne de Canalisations), a subsidiary of Colas, will benefit from the arrival of one of Volvo's first electric excavators. Already present at the Bauma, the ECR25 is now visible in the Yvelines, digging trenches with its bucket or equipped with a rock breeze on a golf course in Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche. This 2,5 tonne electric mini excavator with zero emission silencer is perfect for this type of work. Indeed, in addition to being more comfortable for operators' ears and lungs, the silent electric machine is a plus for urban work and Volvo has understood this well. This is why the range of compact electric machines is being developed as a priority. It remains to be seen whether electric power will spread rapidly on larger machines. No more diesel engines, the ECR25 Electric model has a 48-volt lithium ion motor, the machine can work for 8 hours without recharging, and finally the parts allowing the movement of cylinders such as the hydraulic pump.
The electric excavators of the various manufacturers of construction machinery
Of course, Volvo is not the only manufacturer to focus on electric excavators. Other manufacturers such as Mecalac with their e12 are present. The French brand is promoting its electric version of the 12MTX with LiFe PO4 batteries that also allow it to reach 8 hours of autonomy. JCB has also invested in electricity with a 1862 kg mini excavator, the 19C IE, with performances equivalent to the brand's 19C-I but with an autonomy of 4 hours but which can be recharged in 2 hours on an external 380-420 V charger. An electric excavator must be autonomous, efficient and compact to meet the requirements of urban construction sites, because the silent, zero-emission machine adapts perfectly to it. The first 26-ton electric vehicle, designed by Caterpillar
The American brand Caterpillar, which is no longer presented, is illustrated with a 26-ton electric construction machine (even if it already designs electric cable excavators). It must be understood that if manufacturers limit themselves to small tonnage for electrical equipment it is because these equipment consume less energy and do not require heavy batteries. So Caterpillar took up the challenge by supplying the Norwegian construction company Veidekke with an electric backhoe loader with a capacity of 300 kWh. Its battery is designed to last, the hydraulic pumps are powered by an electric block (122 kW) and the machine's autonomy would be 5 to 7 hours, rechargeable in a single night via its 43 kW on-board charger. This prototype is actually an "electrified" version of a CAT 323 F. This is no coincidence, as Caterpillar is increasingly interested in the design of reciprocating engines and that is why the company has also acquired a stake in Fisker Inc (a company specialising in the design of cars with an electric motor system).
These new electrical machines are a real comfort for drivers and site operators who are less exposed to noise and pollution. But to convince, manufacturers will have to improve the autonomy so as not to make battery charging time their first concern, it also remains to be seen whether the batteries will still be as efficient after many hours of use and as a result of the sudden movements of the booms and sticks, driven by an electric motor connected to the hydraulic cylinders. Training will also be required to ensure the maintenance of new components and safety. Designers of construction machinery will also have to prove themselves on other machines such as tracked loaders.
