Focus on the different types of excavators and their equipment
Excavators are the essential machines of the construction industry, they can be found in many public works jobs and on many construction sites. Codimatra, which has many models of excavators and various equipment and materials for excavators, focuses on these essential construction machines.
Tracked or wheeled ?
When choosing a excavator, it is first necessary to consider whether you want a model on wheels or chains, taking into account the nature of the soil and the working environment.
Also known as chain excavators, this machine is excellent for harsh environments. This type of excavator has a rigid frame and a solid chain drive. Indeed, the tiles of the chain train are much more resistant than the tires. This can be very useful for quarry applications (e. g. SME excavators for Super mass excavation) and for loading large trucks. The reinforced tiles will prevent the excavator from being damaged by debris in a sorting centre for example or on a demolition site. For tiles, it is possible to opt for wide tiles to distribute the weight of the machine, which is very useful on soft floors. Excavators with a reinforced chassis will prove very useful in the quarry. The chain drive will also bring more stability to the machine, which will give it more strength.
Just like the crawler excavator, the wheel excavator will be able to work on 360 degrees thanks to its slewing ring. The chain set is replaced by tires and stability is provided by stabilizers. A blade can also be present at the front to allow a little levelling and provide even more stability. However, the wheeled excavator is much more manoeuvrable than the crawler excavator, it is more suitable for work on stabilized soils. This means that this type of excavator will be found in urban construction sites or in narrower environments. Find our wheel excavators available for sale such as the JCB JS200W or the Komatsu PW140-7.
Excavators adapted to each job
Even if the "standard" excavator is intended for earthworks, the excavators have different names according to the desired application (earthworks, demolition or handling...). Codimatra has classified for you the different excavators found on construction sites or in industry and the most suitable according to the needs and the work to be done.
The material handler most often refers to a hydraulic excavator. Most often it is a wheel excavator with stabilizers on which there is either an elevated cab or an elevated cab. Depending on the models, 2 or 4 stabilisers can be found for excavators with a larger tonnage.
The demolition excavator must have a good working height to demolish larger buildings. This is why it is often equipped with a demolition boom and a long arm with a shear or demolition clamp at the end. Another specific feature is that the cab of a demolition excavator can generally be tilted to a maximum of about 30 degrees to allow the pilot to better visualize the building to be destroyed. The cabins are of course secured and benefit from FOPS (fall over protection structure) which allows them to protect the driver of the demolition excavator from possible projectiles and falling debris, this system is also found on excavators used in quarries to protect against rock falls.
Different equipment for the excavator
Thanks to a fastening system located at the end of the pendulum, many pieces of equipment can be grafted onto the machine to make it very versatile.
Buckets for each application
The most commonly used equipment is the bucket, there are several types. Cleaning buckets to make ditches. 4 in 1 buckets capable of pinching, delighting the material, pushing and loading. And of course the earth-moving bucket for clearing and backfilling the ground.
Hydraulic rock breaker
Also known as a hydraulic hammer, it can break up rock or concrete slabs. Due to its application in the quarry, it is more often equipped on a crawler excavator. Before purchasing an HRM, make sure you have the right attachment on your excavator. Contact Codimatra consultants to acquire the corresponding equipment.
Sorting clamp (grapple)
An essential equipment for sorting or recycling, the sorting clamp can also be used to destroy light structures by catching sheet metal. The sorting clamp is essential for handling.
