Too big or too small? What are the impacts on your machine and your costs?

First, a bucket that is too large compared to the shovel can be disabling. Even if your excavator has enough force to use it and it may seem tempting to reduce the number of loading cycles of your bucket, your excavator will consume too much fuel for longer cycles.

On the other hand, a bucket that is too small is synonymous with repeated cycles and therefore also excessive fuel consumption.

Therefore, always use a bucket that matches the tonnage of your shovel or mini excavator.

The lifetime of a bucket is calculated according to the reinforcements and its dedicated application

The buckets can be reinforced in the areas most exposed to wear, such as the blade, the outer bottom of the bucket, the connection between the blade and the headbands, etc.

At Caterpillar, for example, the ranges of reinforced buckets are segmented according to their application and the abrasion caused by the ground. In order, at least at most reinforced:

General Duty: A bucket with good capacity and quite robust, it is used on many excavation sites. Preferably to be used on low-abrasive and low-impact floors.

Heavy duty: Reinforced bucket that can be used for slightly abrasive materials such as sand, clay or iron ore.

Severe duty: Bucket with additional protections, very useful in quarrying to work rock and limestone.

Extreme duty: For the most abrasive materials (quartz, basalt, rocks...) with a strong impact.

- Abrasion is the wear caused by repeated friction. Abrasion can be more or less important depending on the nature of the soil to be worked.

- The impact is the shock between the ground and the bucket, the harder the ground, the stronger the impact.

Ditching bucket

As its name indicates, the bucket is very useful for cleaning the soil. It can be used to build roadside slopes or ditches. From the side, it can be seen that it has a well rounded shape to best perform this application. There are flat-bottomed cleaning buckets, more suitable for levelling. These buckets are generally designed to be mounted on excavators or mini excavators for the lightest cleaning buckets. There are also tiltable cleaning buckets, they are equipped with a cylinder that allows the bucket to be tilted, which requires an auxiliary hydraulic line. A bolted counter-blade can be added to protect the base blade or a blade with teeth can be added.

Excavator bucket

This type of bucket is designed for earth moving with shovels and mini excavators. This bucket is suitable for material extraction or clearing and backfilling.

Loader bucket

The loader bucket is designed to be mounted on wheel loaders or tracks. These buckets are generally quite large, due to their application. It can grow and take in piles.

Trapezoidal bucket

As its name suggests, this bucket is trapezoidal in shape. This shape is perfect for making ditches at the edge of the road.

Multi-purpose bucket

Very versatile, it can cut, push, level, backfill and even pinch.

High dump bucket

High dump bucket are generally very large volume buckets designed to be placed on wheel loaders. They are very useful for loading large volumes of materials such as cereals.

Trenching bucket

It is the most suitable bucket for digging trenches. Its radius is very narrow, which will be very useful for road and cables works.

Focus on the blade and teeth

The standard blade of a bucket is straight, designed for clearing. Buckets with a delta blade (also called a V blade) can be found in quarries, their V-shaped shape offers them better soil penetration. For teeth, there is a very wide range of teeth of different shapes designed for different applications. The most important thing to consider is the number of teeth, for a quarry application, few teeth promote penetration. To retain the most material, more teeth are needed to reduce the space between the teeth. A counter blade can be installed to protect the base blade.

More specific buckets

The crusher bucket is a bucket that is found in demolition, it takes the solid materials from within and reduces them to small fragments.

The screening bucket will screen the materials so that they can be sorted.

The grapple bucket is a bucket that has closing clamps to catch blocks and be able to move them, this bucket is very rare because there are many handling equipment
